Lucy is a former professional soccer player and current NYPD Police Officer, ready to tackle her first marathon. Coming from a sports background, Lucy had only ever run casually as a way to clear her mind and mentally prepare herself for the many challenges she faces each day at work.
Before this, she ran the NYC and Suffolk County half marathons and is excited to check a full marathon off her bucket list. A friend of hers, who has run two races for Team Answer the Call, introduced Lucy to the organization’s mission. So, when looking for a charity to run the TCS New York City Marathon with, Lucy chose Team Answer the Call to honor those she works alongside.
When Lucy is not running, she is in the gym or continuing to pursue her passion for soccer with the NYPD soccer team. She finds working out in general to be a source of stress relief, but finds something special in participating in activities with fellow officers. As she says, “It’s nice to play with other first responders and people going through the same struggles.” Despite being a different type of training, her participation on the team has helped with her preparation for the upcoming marathon. Between a busy work schedule and a nine-month-old baby at home, the biggest challenge so far has been staying focused and consistent with her training. The team helps keep her moving and working on her endurance.
To Lucy, training is her time to focus on herself and have fun, and the best way to accomplish that is with upbeat music that puts a smile on her face – something especially important given the risks first responders take every day. However, she knows there are “people around us to pick us up and support us.”
More than that, Lucy wants the families Answer the Call serves to know that first responders understand that “families go through a lot every day, with us being on the job, and to lose one of us is not something we take lightly.” She and her fellow first responders are always there to support the families of those who have passed. There is support everywhere, and she hopes these families see it.
